PARADISE NOW
“Art is essentially the affirmation, the blessing, and the deification of existence” – Freidrich Nietzsche
Theology, art and music all are characterized by the aspiration to transcend the borders that language cannot. Paradise Now is a nondenominational curatorial duo that is exploring this commonality by showcasing artists who engage the awe-inspiring space within Grace Cathedral through multi-media installations and performing arts, in collaboration with the monthly social gathering EpiscoDisco.
Grace Cathedral’s ongoing relationships with artists and its unique legacy of open-mindedness and inclusion has provided us with this incredible venue for the arts community. The doors to the cathedral are embossed with scenes of paradise; once inside, the physical grandness provides a respite from the city that encourages introspection and a potential for transcendence. Within this framework, Paradise Now seeks to curate work that temporarily engages with this deep, dark and rich quietness, bound only by finite time in an infinite space.
Paradise Now is Jean Cooney and Eve Ekman. Jean Cooney is an independent arts curator that was fortunate enough to learn everything she knows at Johansson Projects in Oakland, CA. Eve Ekman is an artist, independent curator and social worker (ie mega-woman), and a current doctoral candidate at UC Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare.
