Prayer Rope

Artist Sarah Filley

September’s EpiscoDisco features artist Sarah Filley. For one night her installation Prayer Rope, consisting of 300 feet of 12-braid, marine-grade, black rope will be suspended in the vestibule of the cathedral. Her video piece meditatively documents the effort of counting each prayer knot will illuminate the apse. The imagery of this heavy, knotted rope conjures several conflicting associations: from seafaring and military operations to eroticism and rituals of the sacred.

In her own words, “The physical act of tying 100 knots in the PRAYER ROPE is a contemplative act, which has a history well beyond my own hands. Maybe we need an over-scaled PRAYER ROPE for our REALLY big sins – a repentful admission of our collective guilt. Or, more simply, it may prove to be a visual reminder of the humility of each of our spirits.”

Grace Cathedral

“Great buildings are outward expressions of the human spirit…which speak to the human urge to transcend the mundane and commune with the divine.” Grace Cathedral has always had relationships with contemporary artists, most notably Ansel Adams and more recently Keith Herring, and “embraces innovation and open-minded conversation where inclusion is expected and people of all faiths are welcomed.”

Paradise Now
Paradise Now is nondenominational curatorial duo Eve Ekman and Jean Cooney, showcasing artists who engage this awe-inspiring space through multi-media installations and performing arts.

'Say My Name', installation by Adam Wier

“Realm Dream” is curatorial team Paradise Now’s debut of their site-specific installation series inside San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral. A video screen set within the high hallowed walls will feature dreamy reflections from Eve Ekman. Floating above the pews are the airy sculptural musings of Adam Wier and Eve Ekman. Angelina Moysov of Persephone’s Bees punctuates the night’s cacophony with a solo piano performance. Dreamy drinks concocted by the heavenly Anna Marie. Leave your religious inhibitions at the door for this evening of ephemeral transcendence at the Episco Disco.
